Friday, July 13th Afternoon
After getting situated in our site we decided to explore Dawson. It certainly looks like the early 1900s except for the cars and the pavement on Front Street. All the remaining streets are unpaved gravel/sandy dirt. Front Street faces the Yukon River.
We basically drove up and down the streets which gave us the best indication of what was there. Then we checked out the visitor’s center and wandered up and down various streets taking pictures. Linda checked out a few shops and some of the restaurant menus for dinner that night as we planned to take in the show at Diamond Tooth Gertie’s.
Front Street
We have learned that the locals call the town Dawson, not Dawson City that many use, in order to distinguish between it and Dawson Creek.

The Show
Gertie could really belt out a tune.
The dancers about wore us out. They were very high energy. A good way to take off a few pounds!!

Red Fox begging along the Dempster Highway
This fox followed the truck. After I took some pictures and it decided I wasn’t going to feed it, it sauntered over to Linda’s side of the truck. It sat there staring at her. I told Linda he/she was sucking in her stomach to make it look like she was starving. It is a red fox but there are many color variations. This one was more black and silver. As we drove off, the fox ran after us for about 20 feet.

At a pullout where we stopped to take pictures there was a truck that was labeled, “Yukon Doors”. There were ladders on its rack. The fellow was taking pictures and when he approached me I jokingly asked if he had a lot of doors to fix up here as I assumed he was camping. He replied “Yes, business is good; I’m on my way up to Eagle Plains which is about another 100 miles.” His business is in Whitehorse and he covers the Northwest Territories, Yukon, and part of Alaska. We talked for a while and he suggested we go another .5km and take a road that led up to a microwave tower as the view from there was great. We did and from the following pictures you can see it was.

The Dempster Highway was gravel and we created a lot of dust. At one spot the clouds let loose and it was nothing but mud for about 5 minutes. Same on the way back.

We are off to Chicken and Tok, AK in the morning via the “Top of the World highway”.
