Last night the long hours of daylight weren’t the only problem in trying to sleep. At midnight the fireworks began nearby for Canada Day. We didn’t think fireworks would be an issue on this trip as it doesn’t get dark until almost midnight. Well, we were wrong. The BOOMING began at midnight and continued for about an hour.
The first hymn in church was O’ Canada for Canada Day. It was in the back of the hymn book along with America the Beautiful. It is Linda’s favorite national anthem and is a very fitting song.
Today during the time we were at church we missed the big (for here) Canada Day parade that was just down the street from the RV Campground. We did see some of the floats leaving when we returned. Also, the advice that everything would be closed today was clearly wrong. Some places were but a lot were open and may be closed tomorrow which is the workday holiday observance.
Several times today people asked us where we were from. When we told them California they immediately asked if we were going to or coming from Alaska. To the last person who asked that, we commented that everyone asked the same thing. She replied, “No one just comes to Grande Prairie unless they have family or work here. Everyone is going somewhere else and from here it is to or from Alaska.
Most of the people that come through here are from the Midwest or East and come up through Edmonton. Those going from the west typically go up through Prince George and then to Dawson Creek. Of course they miss the beauty of Jasper. We will see most of that route on our return or have seen it on previous trips.
Tomorrow we head to Dawson Creek, BC and beyond. We aren’t sure where we will spend the night but there are several RV Parks and Provincial or Regional Parks along the way so it will just depend on how many stops we make. We will stop in Dawson Creek for at least a few hours as it is Milepost “0” on the Alaska Highway and we have to get a picture of it and check out what else there is to see.
It may be July 6-7th before we are able to upload another post when we have Wi-Fi in Watson Lake, Yukon Territory.
